What is a Multigenre Inquiry Project?A Multigenre Inquiry Project uses a text as a springboard for students to explore an essential question in creative ways through multiple perspectives. The project as a whole leads to a deeper understanding of the question and the text itself. This project was created as part of a secondary English pedagogy class at Wake Forest University.
OverviewThe Hate U Give by Angie Thomas tells the story of a black teenage girl, Starr, who is forced to reckon with police brutality when her childhood friend is murdered by a police officer right in front of her. She has to decide what lengths she is willing to go to in order to achieve justice for her friend, while also balancing a dual identity between her predominantly black neighborhood and the predominantly white private school she attends. This novel led me to ask the question, "What power to individuals have to challenge systems of injustice?" I responded to this question by creating a number of genres. Explore these genres using the "Genres" menu in the upper right hand corner of the website.
